XXI Fulbright Summer School in the Humanities

Visiting Lecturers

Chris Merrill (University of Iowa)
Christopher Merrill has published six collections of poetry, including Watch Fire, for which he received the Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets; many edited volumes and translations; and six books of nonfiction, among them, Only the Nails Remain: Scenes from the Balkan Wars, Things of the Hidden God: Journey to the Holy Mountain, The Tree of the Doves: Ceremony, Expedition, War, and Self-Portrait with Dogwood. His writings have been translated into nearly forty languages; his journalism appears widely; his honors include a Chevalier from the French government in the Order of Arts and Letters. As director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, Merrill has conducted cultural diplomacy missions to more than fifty countries. He serves on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, and in April 2012 President Obama appointed him to the National Council on the Humanities.

Maureen Freely (University of Warwick)
Maureen Freely is a writer with seven novels to her name and many other strings to her bow. Well known as a translator of the Turkish Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk, she has also brought into English several classics and works by Turkey’s rising stars. For many years she worked as a journalist in London, writing about literature, social justice, and human rights. As chair of the Translator’s Association and more recently as President and Chair of English PEN, she has campaigned for writers and freedom of expression internationally. She teaches at the University of Warwick.

Maya Kucherskaya holds PhD (University of California, Los Angeles), Candidate of Philological Sciences; she is Professor at School of Philology, Faculty of the Humanities, NRU HSE, Coordinator of the Academic Program “Literary Craftmanship”. Laureat of a great number of literary prizes, Maya Kucherskaya has published several well-received books, including The Rain God (Student Booker), Auntie Mina.

Andrey Astvatsaturov (SPBU)
Andrey Astvatsaturov is a Candidate of Philogical Sciences, Docent, Department of History of Western Literatures, Deputy Chair, Interdisciplinary Department of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Saint Petersburg State University. He is a scholar with an interest in American and English literature of the XIX-XX centuries. As a writer, he was nominated for several prizes for his books Naked People (Top-50, which he won; Russian Booker), Skunskamera (short-listed for Dovlatov’s prize, New Literature Prize, Top-50 prize, Big Book prize).
